After living in Älmhult Sweden for four years, I have experienced many unexpected problems.
The radiator in our apartment stopped heating.
The doorbell stopped working.
A bedroom door got stuck.
The kitchen sink became blocked.
A window cracked.
And one day, I discovered that our car had a flat tire.
Every time, I had the same question:
“Who should I contact?”
If you are new to Sweden, finding help is not always easy. In Japan, there are often repair shops and service companies for many different problems. In Sweden, the approach is often different.
Many Swedes grow up seeing their parents paint walls, repair fences, maintain their gardens, or fix things around the house. Because of this, many people first ask themselves:
“Can I fix this myself?”
Professional repair services are also expensive. It is not unusual for labour costs to be several hundred kronor per hour, sometimes much more. As a result, people often try to repair things themselves before calling a professional.
However, before looking for a repair company, it is important to know who is responsible for the problem.
If You Live in a Rental Apartment
However, if you rent an apartment, your first contact should usually be your landlord (hyresvärd).
For example, if:
- the heating stops working
- a door or lock breaks
- a window cracks
- the sink becomes blocked
- there is a problem with ventilation
you should normally contact your landlord rather than searching for a repair company yourself.
In Älmhult, many rental apartments are managed by ABO (Älmhults Bostäder), while others are owned by private landlords or housing companies.
If You Own Your Home
If you live in a villa, most repairs are your responsibility.

What About Toys, Small Electronics, and Everyday Items?
This is where things become more difficult.
When a radiator stops working or a window breaks, it is usually clear who to contact. But what about a toy, a keyboard, a lamp, or another small item?
I recently started looking for someone who could help repair a keyboard with a loose power connection. Finding help was not easy.
After asking in local Facebook groups, several people suggested repairing it myself. One person offered to lend me soldering equipment, and another introduced me to a makerspace community where people learn practical skills together.
This experience taught me something interesting about Sweden. Many people are willing to help, share knowledge, and teach others how to repair things instead of simply throwing them away.
At the same time, it can be difficult for newcomers to know where to find these people and communities.
That is one of the reasons I became interested in the idea of a Repair Café in Älmhult.
Is There a Repair Café in Älmhult?
While researching this topic, I started looking for repair groups, workshops, and Repair Café activities in and around Älmhult.
The idea behind a Repair Café is simple: people help each other repair broken items, learn new skills, reduce waste, and meet others in the community.
At the moment, there is no regular Repair Café in Älmhult, but there has been interest from local residents.
If you would like to learn simple repairs, electronics, soldering, bicycle maintenance, or help create a future repair community in Älmhult, I would love to hear from you.
Together, we might be able to build something useful for the community.
